WHAT MUSIC CAN I HAVE ON MY WEDDING VIDEO?

The answer is..any music you like!  However ( and there is always a however!) if you choose music that is still under copyright then there are restrictions.  Any music which is still under copyright cannot be used unless you pay a fee.  There are agencies such as the Performing Rights Society (P.R.S) or the Mechanical Copyright Protection Society (M.C.P.S) who collect fees on behalf of the owners/artists of the recorded material.  The fees vary according to how the musical piece is going to be used i.e if it is to be broadcast (not a problem if it’s your wedding video!) unless of course you happen to be famous and that it’s likely to be aired on national television, or if it’s for private viewing then different fees are charged. 

Most wedding video companies such as Kliq Weddings who are an Essex based wedding videography and photography company, should advise you at the time of booking of the legal issues regarding the recording of incidental music (D.J, band etc) or the adding of music to a final DVD.  In theory the D.J, Band or venue it’s self should have a current licence allowing either the playing or performing of music, and this should be referred to in the wedding video companies contract.  The video company will, by virtue of filming an event unavoidably record whatever ambient music is being played and therefore would be covered by the above licences.  However (there’s the However word again!!!) if you wish to have your favourite music i.e Robbie Williams, Sterophonics or whoever added or edited into your final DVD during the post production phase then a fee has to be paid, now this shouldn’t be of any concern to the bride and groom as most wedding video companies will allow in their costs fees to cover this, if not they should make you aware that extra charges will be added in order to include copyright material in your final DVD.

Wedding Video Production – Choosing the right Video for your Wedding

I have a limited budget, do I have photographs or video?

There is no denying  that photographs are the main record of your very special day and it is something that you can look over for years to come,  and It is without doubt that when a couple decide to get married the things that are highest priorities on the list are usually the wedding venue, dress and photographer followed by things such as reception venue, honeymoon and transport etc.  Video is usually one of the last things to be considered as it is usually seen as a luxury that can only be considered once everything else has been decided and finalised.

However, we at Kliq Media who are based in Essex know from years of experience gained in the wedding service industry that the majority of couples tell us after the event that the best decision and investment they made was having their wedding videoed.  Most couples agree that if it wasn’t for the video recording of their event that they would have very little recollection as the day tends to be so emotionally charged and overwhelming they are unable to recall in any detail the beauty and romance of the day.

How To Choose The Right Photographer!

A quick internet search such as 'Wedding Photographer Essex' will bring up countless pages and websites from local Essex Photographers all saying how wonderful their work is and showing you examples of their work (including our own Kliq Weddings site!). This choice can be very bewildering at first so how and where do you start?

Our first piece of advice is have a look at all the sites you can possibly look at and take the following into consideration:

• Does the photographer have photographs you actually like the look of?
• Does the photographer have a certain 'style' that you like e.g modern vs traditional.
• Does the photographer have recent testimonials on the site?
• Is there a price list? Is there a variety of options to suit different budgets?
• Do they offer a range of albums/photobooks/prints?
• Does the photographer have a qualification/experience?
• How many photographers will cover the wedding?

Once you have answered the above questions then write down a short list of 3 or 4 photographers. The next piece of advice would then be to phone or email to arrange a meeting with the photogrpaher to discuss your wedding in more detail. At the meeting it is important that you consider the following:

• As you talk to the photographer ask yourself - Do I actually like them? Do they put you at ease? Do they have a sense of humour? This may sound strange but it is really important that you get on well with your photographer as you will be spending a lot of time with them both before and during your wedding day, if you don't feel comfortable with them then this will show in the pictures!
• Do they offer you the shots you want or do they tell you what they think you should have? A good photographer will ask your opinions and will not tell you what you will get. Remember your wedding is about you and not the photographer!
• Will they negotiate a price and options with you to suit your budget?
• Make sure they show you examples of their work and any extras such as photo books. Make sure you think the quality is what you expect from the price.
• Ask if they know the venue. If they don't then make sure they are willing to visit the venue prior to the wedding day so they can find the best places for shots and get to know any rules for photography at the venue. This service should carry no extra charge!
• Make sure you find out who will be taking the photographs on the day. Some companies employ freelance photographers to cover weddings. Make sure you know who you will be getting on the day!
• Ask about the post wedding services. How long do your photographs get stored for? This is important in case you require prints later on. Do they charge for processing and photo effects work? A good comapny again should have no extra charge for this service!
• Make sure you find out what you will get for the price of a package. Does it come with an album/photobook? Do you get a CD-Rom with your images on? What is the copyright of the CD-Rom?
• Do they have a contract you need to sign or require a deposit? Remember a contract is mutually beneficial for you as well as the photographer.

Reportage vs Traditional Wedding Photography

So you've browsed the net, visited Wedding Fairs and talked to various photographers. If you have done these things then the chances are you have come across the words 'Reportage Photography'. Sounds impressive. So what is it you may ask? Well...reportage photography seems to be the flavour of the month in Wedding Photography currently. Reportage photography can basically be worked out by the 'report' part of the name. Reportage photography is more about capturing the mood, feelings and emotions of a wedding in a much more informal way then traditional staged wedding shots allow. Reportage shots often capture the emotion in peoples faces, quite simply because they are not aware they are being photographed! As you will probably be aware, the most natural photographs are those captured when the subject is unaware of a photo being taken. A good reportage photographer will be able to get amazing, emotional pictures of you and your wedding guests without you being aware. But of course sometimes you don't want just these types of shots, you may wish to have traditional group photographs as these are not possible with the reportage style. These shots need to be set up to make sure all the people needed in the shot are actually there in the shot! But these static staged shots don't have to be stuffy and boring. A good photographer will be able to bring out the emotion in these photographs by putting the subjects at ease. Photos are meant to be fun and capture the happiness of your wedding day! At Kliq Weddings we offer both types of photography. Choosing A Wedding Venue

Choosing your wedding venue is one of the most important wedding planning decisions you'll make. 

Reception & ceremony
There are likely to be two parts of your wedding to organise – the wedding ceremony and the wedding reception.  A church wedding is still one of the favourite choices for many couples, and most have a particular church in mind. In this case, the reception must be planned around the ceremony location. Factors such as ease of transport from service to reception will be important when planning your church wedding.

If, on the other hand, you're thinking about a civil wedding, you have the option of choosing a venue that will host both your wedding ceremony and your wedding reception. If this is what you are hoping for, you will need to choose a venue that is licensed for marriage ceremonies. This may come with a higher price tag than non-licensed wedding venues, but has the benefit of minimising the amount of travelling involved for you and your wedding guests.

How many guests?
The type of wedding you have will depend partly on how big it will be, so here are some things to think about before approaching wedding venues:

Venue capacity: It may sound obvious but many venues will not be able to magic up extra space from nowhere if you add 20 extra guests at the last minute. You should have a good idea of numbers before you start looking at venues.

Seated or standing wedding reception? A formal meal will obviously require more space than a stand-up buffet, so a venue whose seated capacity is 100 might well be able to accommodate 200 for a canapé reception. Which do you want?

Entertainment facilities: Bands and other entertainment can take up a large amount of space, as can a dance floor, so decide when and where you want the entertainment to take place, and check with the venue that this can be done in the space available.

Which wedding venue?

Any number of buildings can make a perfect wedding reception venue, but here are some of the most popular options:

Historic wedding reception venue.Castles, country houses and stately homes are among the locations many dream of for their big day. If your budget can stretch to it, this offers a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to enjoy the use of a stunning building.

Hotel wedding reception. There are so many different types of hotel that there’s likely to be something for everyone, from traditional to ultra-modern. Having accommodation on the spot is, of course, a big plus.

Marquee wedding reception. If you have access to spacious gardens or other outdoor space, a marquee could be worth considering. Many people are surprised at how pricey it can be to hire a marquee for their wedding, but the plus side is that you can take control of wedding catering and could save a considerable amount by providing your own alcohol.

Sports or social club wedding reception. Different types of club premises can be perfect for a wedding reception. Do plenty of research and you could find one that’s in a stunning location, too. For example, some sailing or rowing clubs have picturesque waterside views, and can often be hired at a reasonable price, certainly compared to other popular wedding venues.

Restaurant or pub wedding reception. Food and drink are among the main ingredients for a successful wedding reception, so where better to head than to a lovely restaurant or pub? Bear in mind that you’re more likely to find a good match if your wedding party is smaller, and if you’re lucky you might even be able to escape the heavy costs that are often quoted as soon as you mention the ‘w’ word!

Wedding venue checklist

Before signing on the dotted line, check the detail and small print.

Wedding fees. Exaggerated costs, such as a hefty corkage fee or drinks prices, might mean compromising on other aspects of the wedding. Vote with your feet if you feel it’s not worth it.

Wedding venue staff. Are the staff experienced and professional? Flexibility is also important. Are they willing to adapt to your needs? This will be a major factor in how smoothly your day runs.

Wedding venue facilities. Is the venue suitable for guests with a disability, and can it provide appropriate seating for the elderly and/or young children?

Wedding guest accommodation. Is there a reasonable range of accommodation within easy access of the venue?

Wedding transport. Is there enough parking for guests who drive, and decent transport links for those who don’t?

Wedding venue restrictions. Does the venue impose limitations that could negatively affect your plans? Some stipulate no loud music after a certain time, others don’t like confetti or candles, and certain (usually historic) venues forbid high-heeled shoes for fear of their flooring being damaged.

Wedding photography. Plenty of natural light in your venue will mean better pictures. You might also want to check that there are plenty of appealing outdoor spots close at hand. For advice on choosing a photographer who will make the most of your wedding venue.

Wedding decoration. Are table linen, flowers, place cards and other decorations included in the quoted price, or will you have to provide your own?

Wedding extras. Check the availability of extras such as a cake stand and cake knife. Many wedding venues will lend you these, but having to hire them separately adds to your hassle and your wedding expenses.

How to choose a Wedding Photographer

You've got the dress, booked your dream location and the flowers are on order. Now you need to find a wedding photographer. Given some of the high costs some professionals charge for capturing the precious memories of the biggest day of your life, you want to be sure that you've found the right style, price and package. After all, your wedding is one day, but the photos will last a lifetime.

1. Do Your Research

There are loads of amazing wedding photographers out there, it's just a matter of finding the right one for you. Wedding fairs will give you the opportunity to meet different photographers and get a feel for their style of photography, as well as a sense of their prices. Visit the photographers websites and look at their samples.

2. Stay Traditional or Go Modern?

Try and find a photographer with a style that suits you - you will want to feel happy with the pictures for many years to come. Do you like the old fashioned soft lighting effects or do you prefer the more modern punchy style? Do you like Reportage – relaxed style or a more set up traditional shots? Or maybe you like a mixture of both? Ask to see examples of the styles of photography the photographers you meet specialise in and make your choices!

3. Meet the Photographer

It's important to meet your photographer in advance; not only to give you the opportunity to talk through your requirements but also to give you time to feel comfortable with the photographer. If possible, we recommend your first meeting to be up to six months before the wedding.

4. Images

Images should be sharp and well-exposed. If your photographer is using a digital camera, make sure they can provide high-resolution images in case you want to print copies of your photographs.

5. Budget

After finding your photographer for the day, it's time to talk cold, hard cash. The last thing you want is for extra costs to show up on the bill. Most wedding photographers offer a variety of wedding packages, depending on how many images you would like and how long they will be at the wedding.

6. Shot List

It's a good idea to provide the photographer with a list of shots you require so you both know what's expected from the day. A good photographer will suggest some options but they should also be able to create a bespoke package for your needs. A list will help the photographer but will also speed up the time it takes for the formal photographs, leaving you to enjoy the rest of your day.

7. How Should the Images Be Supplied?

Many couples prefer their photographs to be supplied on disk rather than in wedding albums. Perhaps you could host the images on your own website so friends and family can access them easily? Maybe you'd like a combination of both prints and digital images? Ask the photographer which online options they offer. Remember to ask whether you will retain copyright of the images, and make sure the images won't have a watermark so you can print off your own images. If you do want a traditional photo album, ask to see some examples so you can approve the print finish. Check the delivery times too - you don't want them sitting in the post office while you are on your honeymoon!

8. Picture Perfect

Some photographers offer a pre-wedding shoot, normally a few weeks before ceremony. If you feel camera-shy, a pre-wedding shoot may help you feel more comfortable and will give you an opportunity to practice your poses.

Advice for Choosing a Wedding Videographer!

It has become increasingly popular for couples to have a video made of their wedding and reception celebrations, often to complement the photographer's record. A video provides a way to look back on the events of your ceremony and reception, and gives an opportunity to view the celebrations from a different perspective.

Most couples feel that their wedding day goes by in a blur and that they do not remember the finer details of the celebrations. Things like guests' outfits, the bridesmaid's giggles and the way the guests laughed at the groom's speech can get missed in the excitement. Also, the bride and groom are often in one place for a long time, while having photographs taken for example, and may miss some lovely moments elsewhere. A video is an excellent way of capturing these details, allowing the couple and their guests to relive the event in quieter moments for years to come. A couple that would like a video of their wedding can decide to ask a friend to help or employ a professional. But before making any of these decisions, ensure that your wedding venues allows Videography. If Videography is permitted, find out if there will be any additional charge levied by the venue.

Using A Professional
If having a high quality video of your wedding is important to you and you have the budget, you should employ a professional videographer. Each videographer has their own particular style and no two wedding videos will be the same. As well as styles varying, so do prices. There is no standard charge for professional videographers. You will find that prices range from a few hundred pounds, for part-time professionals using semi-professional equipment, to a few thousand pounds for the most experienced videographers that use broadcast quality equipment and employ several camera operators and crew. Like most things in life, you usually get what you pay for, although you should expect to get a good final product by paying in the range £500 to £,000.

Before you visit or speak to a videographer, give some thought to the style you would like. Perhaps you would be happy with the standard wedding video style or maybe you'd prefer a fly-on-the-wall, documentary style production using more than one camera (it is usually very evident if a video has been made using just one or more than one camera). You may like to have a video of just your reception, just the ceremony or a record of the whole day, including the bride and groom preparing and ending with the last dance.

When To Book
As wedding Videography is seasonal, the most popular and experienced videographers will be booked many months or more ahead, especially during the busy months of May to September. Therefore, it is advisable to make enquiries as soon as you have booked your venues to avoid disappointment.

Wedding Photography Prices Explained!

These are the elements that make up wedding photography prices. My aim is to explain a little of what goes into them, because I know that at face value professional wedding photography can seem expensive.

Time

Probably the main thing that affects what a photographer charges is time.

Usually a photographer will offer different packages according to how long he is at your wedding for.

This might start at just 1 hour for a low key, civil ceremony at a registry office, and go up to 12 or 14 hours to cover the bride getting ready in the morning to the couple leaving the venue at night.

One of the curses of digital photography is that after the wedding the photographer has to edit all the photos on a computer, which for 1000+ photos might take another 1-3 days.

Prices are beginning to reflect this increase in time, due to the opportunity cost of the photographer. In the past he might have been earning money photographing portraits during this time, but now he has to spend more time in front of a computer and less time shooting.

The upside to this is that you now have access to a far greater range and quality of digital products, as well as (in theory) better quality photos.

Other areas that require a photographer's time are planning meetings, location pre-visits and album-planning.

Like with any other professional service, wedding photography prices vary on the photographer's hourly rate, which will be based on his experience, training and market position.





Photos

The quantity and sizes of photos also affects how much the package will cost.

Photos may be included as loose prints or included in the main album. Generally, photographers operate an economy of scale, so the more you buy the cheaper they are.

The issue is how much is a photograph actually worth? To answer this you have to think about what a photo is. It's obviously more than just a piece of paper, which in itself is worth pennies.

To the viewer it's a memory, documentation of a person or event, or an artistic creation.

To the photographer it's the result of training and experience in composition, framing, lighting, exposure and post-production. It expresses his artistic vision, his ability to be in the right place at the right time and his skill at capturing the moment.

As a result, how much value a photographer places on each photograph will reflect his experience, training and achievements within his field, as well as equipment costs, expenses and overheads.

So a nationally or internationally known wedding photographer will charge far more for his work than somebody who's just starting out.





Albums

Assuming a package includes an album, this is the other major factor that affects wedding photography prices.

When talking about wedding albums, I'm talking about professional albums that are only available to professional photographers.





There are several big players in the wedding album market.

Spicer Hallfield is a U.K. manufacturer. They have a large range of traditional and contemporary albums that are pre-assembled. The photographer will then add photos and mounts himself.

Photographers using Spicer Hallfield will probably hold certain albums in stock and give their clients a choice of which album they'd prefer.

Update: As of early 2009, Spicer Hallfield has ceased trading.

Jorgensen is an Australian manufacturer based in Perth. Their albums are very popular with some of the big name wedding photographers in the U.K.

They also have a set range of albums but through their JAD album planning software photographers can customise albums according to their clients' tastes.

Queensberry is based in Auckland, New Zealand. They differ to the Spicer Hallfield and Jorgensen in that all their albums are bespoke made to order, so they don't hold any albums in stock.

This easiest way Queensberry albums are ordered is through album-planning software Photojunction, which allows wedding couples to choose every aspect of the album. For example page styles, page edge colours, cover materials, etc.





Wedding photography prices can vary on the make, size, style and quality of the wedding album included in the package. So it's always a good idea to find out which album manufacturer you potential wedding photographer uses.

Some photographers will hold an album-planning session with their clients, which may take several hours. During this time they will create the exact layout of the album on a computer.

Others might create a rough draft first, drawing on his experience of what 'works', then the clients can make any changes should they wish.

On top of these feature albums, a photographer may or may not include a proof album in the package.








Additional Products

The final thing that contributes to wedding photography prices is products like:


Framed prints;
Folder prints;
Canvas wraps;
DVD slideshows;
Thank you cards;
Online galleries;
High resolution DVD of all images.

Like individual images, a photographer will base the price of these products on his expertise and experience.

Kliq Weddings had a wonderful day back in April this year filming and photographing the wedding of Gary and Louise Hobbs. We went down to Honiton in Devon to film this one and we couldn't have asked for a nicer day and a better venue. The staff at Coombe House were absolutely fantastic and very helpful.
