In the Mediterranean, most tour operators start their summer flight programmes in May, but the crowds have yet to arrive, so prices are set low. Long days of warm sunshine are all but guaranteed, yet it’s rarely too hot to wander into town or do some sightseeing
May is also one of the best months to go long haul. Prices in the Caribbean plummet after the Easter holidays, yet the weather is all but perfect with several months to go before the start of the hurricane season.
Honeymoon ideas in Europe
For a stress-free spring honeymoon, what could be easier than treating yourselves to first class tickets on Eurostar and heading to Paris before the heat and crowds of summer take hold? There are many affordable boltholes to be found at this time of year.Florence is perfect in May while Venice is another city it’s best to visit before summer takes hold and to make it extra special, get there by Orient-Express so that you can see the European countryside in all its spring glory.
Spain has some of the most incredible cities to explore if you’re looking for romance and culture. I recommend heading to Andalucia and exploring Seville, Cordoba and Grenada. No hoteliers or taxi drivers will be jaded by the summer rush and the welcome will be extra special for honeymooners.
May is just about the most romantic time to head to The Mediterranean. Islands are always a great honeymoon choice and if you want to keep a Spanish vibe going, head to Mallorca which is experiencing something of a renaissance in style, with trendy hotels in the capital Palma as well as tried and tested rural and coastal hideaways.
Of course the Greek Islands are an affordable and beautiful option in May with Santorini orAlonissos top of my list for their boutique style and pretty villas.
The Dalmatian coast of Croatia is beautiful in May with sparkling turquoise seas, island excursions and great food at sensible prices. Head for Dubrovnik which will not be crowded at this time of year, staying at hotel Bellevue, the only contemporary boutique hotel in town.
The French island of Corsica, with its amazing scented Maquis, shines brightly in May or you may prefer to go Italian and treat yourself to a week on the island of Capri, perhaps combined with another week exploring the Amalfi coast. Alternatively, stay at a gorgeous country hotel in Umbriaor Le Marche.
More active honeymooners, might like to take the opportunity of slightly cooler fine weather to take a cycling tour of Italy. Or how about taking a romantic road road trip in a cool camper van? You can rent one from Wicked Campers which has collection points in the UK, Italy, Spain, Germany and Amsterdam.
Long haul honeymoon destinations in May
This is a superb time to head to the Caribbean. The islands are also winding down after the high season, making this a particularly relaxing time to visit popular destinations such as Barbados,Jamaica, St Lucia and the Dominican Republic, where I love Secrets Sanctuary Cap Cana. For seclusion, go for Young Island in the Grenadines. In Grenada, I love the stylish hideaway of Laluna.Cuba is a Caribbean island with a difference, combining great beachs with a fascinating lively culture. My favourite hotels include the five-star Melia Cayo Coco and Sol Cayo Largo, a four-star all-inclusive on its own private island.
You could also explore the Caribbean on a Star Clippers cruise, setting sail on a magnificent tall ship. The vessels are small enough to feel intimate and stop at small ports inaccessible to big cruise ships. And what could be more romantic than a real sailing ship?
May is also a great month to explore California. Check out this wonderful collection of honeymoon hotels. It’s also a good time to head for Palm Beach County, a 47-mile stretch of sandy coastline that is home to some fabulous luxury hotels including The Ritz-Carlton, Palm Beach and The Four Seasons Resort.
This is a fine time to honeymoon in the Indian Ocean. In Mauritius the humid summer months (December to April) have passed, but the winds of July and August are months away. Check into such gems as the three-star Veranda Paul et Virginie or discover the newly re-opened Trou aux Biches. A two-centre honeymoon with South Africa is also a good option now.
The Seychelles are beautiful in May but prices are lower before the high season in July and August. There are plenty of boutique hotels such as Coco de Mer and Black Parrot Suites on Praslin Island or you can push the boat out with a stay at Banyan Tree Seychelles on Male or a private island like Denis.
In Bali, May is the beginning of the dry season, so this spiritual island will be looking particularly lush after the rains. Here are some of the world’s most romantic hotels such as Anantara Seminyak Resort and Spa, or the pampering haven of Spa Village Resort Tembok Bali.
If you fancy Malaysia, head to the delightful island of Pangkor Laut which lies in splendid isolation three miles off the west coast of Peninsula Malaysia.
In Africa, May is a superb time to visit Botswana where the weather is fine and the trees are green. Great places to stay include Sanctuary Stanley’s Camp in the Okavango Delta and Sanctuary Chobe Chilwero in Chobe National Park.
If you want to experience total relaxation in a sublime natural setting, head to about Ananda in the Himalayas which is set beside the Ganges River in the foothills of the world’s greatest mountain range. Built on a royal estate, it offers superb food and spa treatments, plus the option to try treks, nature walks and white water rafting.
UK honeymoons in May
If you want a romantic, rustic and chic experience – and are looking for a honeymoon bargain – trySheepskin which has a collection of cottages in Wales and Devon. My top recommendations include Tailor’s Cottage in Snowdonia, Tamar Cottages in Devon’s Tamar Valley and Hafod Glan Gwy on the banks of the River Wye.You can expect good weather in England’s southwest. The boutique-style apartments at Hawke’s Point, close to St Ives, are a great self-catering honeymoon option with lovely beaches, surfing, walking and Cornish food on your doorstep.
In Devon you can pamper yourselves with great food and spa treatments at The Cary Arms in Babbacombe Bay.
For something more grand, I recommend Lucknam Park Hotel & Spa near Bath. If you want a secluded country hideaway try somewhere like Somerton Mill in Oxfordshire – find more properties for two.
