Wines - Red, White or Rose for your wedding? More importantly is the question: How much wine to buy? This will depend on the number of guests and if they are a wine-drinking crowd. The menu will influence the volume of wine you will need to buy, as will the time of day your wedding is held. Generally, guests tend to drink less wine in the daytime than in the evening and will prefer lighter, chilled wines if the sun is shining. Don't forget the time of year either - people prefer heavier wines in the colder months.
It's better to have too much wine than not enough. You don’t want your guests moaning that there’s not a drop left on the table with which to toast you at the end of the meal, or to polish off the last tasty mouthful on their plate. Most bottles of wine will provide 4 large or 5 - 6 smaller glasses and it is suggested that each guest should be provided with around a half to one bottle. This will depend on how long the meal lasts and whether all your guests are wine drinkers, but should be sufficient for a 2 hour reception. It is also recommended that guests are provided with bottles of mineral water for each table which helps to discourage them from over indulging on the wine just because they are thirsty. In conclusion, it is better to ope for more rather than less for your wine requirements - and remember, most caters will take back any unopened bottles, or they can be discreetly handed to your “favoured” guests on their way home!
