Sparkling wine is not just for the budget conscious but is also an acceptable alternative to Champagne, which can sometimes be more acidic and therefore less palatable for your guests. Go for an Italian prosecco (Presecco di Conegliano Valdobbiadene is highly recommended). Your guests will also enjoy a good Spanish cava (the Freixenet company from the Barcelona region produce an excellent vintage cava, prices from around £8 to £20). These wines are readily available from the larger supermarket chains such as Morrisons and Waitrose, but don’t forget you may need to add corkage to the cost if you are providing your own wine.
